Impact on Nursing

As nurses, we constantly encounter individuals struggling with alcohol and substance use. Nurses have a unique opportunity to connect with patients and help them start a journey to recovery. The earlier we can intervene with substance use disorders, the better the chance of recovery.

The Role of the Nurse Practitioner

Nurse practitioners are in a position to provide comprehensive care to a variety of patients. With the increase of substance use disorders, nurse practitioners have an opportunity to manage patients seeking recovery. Providers must be aware of their biases and remain educated to provide adequate treatment for these patients.

PMHNP encounter both substance use and mental health disorders daily. Although the impact of substance use disorders is well established, adolescents are often overlooked. Since adolescents are the most vulnerable age group, more focus should be placed on preventing substance use early. By addressing the needs of all ages, as an aspiring PMHNP, I will be better prepared to support individuals struggling with addiction and mental health challenges.

The Future is Limitless.

Future research may explore the idea of preaddiction. Similar to the role of prediabetes on type 2 diabetes development, preaddiction could help providers intervene earlier in patients with warning signs of addiction.

For now, substance use disorders remain a complex and prevalent issue affecting individuals of all age groups. Addressing this problem requires a flexible, holistic approach to recognize the unique needs of each client. Integrating this age-inclusive model into healthcare and community settings could improve the effectiveness of current interventions, reduce dropout rates, and improve patient outcomes.
